The Power of Acting and Movement for Singers

My season at The Australian National Theatre under the mentorship of Joan Harris (OAM) changed the trajectory of my whole life and singing career. As David Jaanz, my goal as a young singer was to be the best in the world. However, I didn’t realize I was somewhat closed in, shy, and lacking the confidence needed to truly shine as an artist.

Acting classes can be transformative. They push boundaries, stretch the artist, and break the box of limitation that often keeps a “safe singer always a safe singer,” but never allows them to evolve into a complete performer. The power of acting lies in its ability to explore the areas of risk, encourage boundary-pushing, and conquer fear and self-imposed limitations. For many singers, this is the crucial step needed for growth, yet it is a path less traveled. Many remain confined, singing from a superficial place without depth, brand, or substance.

The greatest performers in the world can tap into something much deeper. They possess a unique flair—flamboyance, style, and charisma that sets them apart. This individuality often results from great coaching and training that goes beyond vocal scales and routines.

When I underwent acting and movement training, it helped me find my inner confidence and unleash my true potential. This training allowed me to explore different musical genres, develop my songwriting skills, and even achieve significant success by winning the World Yamaha competition in 1989, where I represented Australia and triumphed over 22,000 bands from around the globe. Following my pop star days, I was dubbed “The Entertainer,” performing at numerous corporate functions and events, including a decade-long residency at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne. None of this would have been possible without the acting and movement training that helped me become a more complete artist.

Acting training provides more than just theatrical skills—it teaches singers how to truly engage with their audience, convey emotion, and create a memorable stage presence. It pushes them out of their comfort zones and helps them discover their unique brand, voice, and artistic identity.

I encourage every singer to take an intensive acting and movement course. It could be the breakthrough you need to escape the stagnation that traps so many singers. At our school, we’ve witnessed time and again how singers transform from ordinary to extraordinary by embracing the art of acting and movement. It’s about more than just singing—it’s about telling a story, connecting with the audience, and leaving a lasting impression.

Don’t settle for being just another voice in the crowd. Let us help you uncover the artist within and realize your full potential. With the right training, passion, and commitment, you can achieve greatness and make your mark in the world of music.
